How institutions use Management Information Systems to keep track on you?

I have experienced getting a letter promptly from an institution which I am indebted to, when my payments were behind schedule. I was very amazed at how quickly they responded by sending me a mail indicating that I was short of a payment. In fact the institution was using a financial software program which was monitoring all persons who had payments outstanding and keeping abreast of payments from clients. When any payments were short the system will raise an alert and proceed to go through the steps to inform the client of their default.
There are other software that businesses use to keep track of their customers, for instance an automobile service company usually have on there computer database a record of their customers and when their vehicles need servicing like changing of oil, brakes pad, fan belts etc. The computer software has a database of all the customers and information on what and when was their last service. An automated notification will be generated on the computer for both the organization and the customers for the schedule next service. The customer is then contacted by a customer service representative informing them of their next scheduled appointment.
